Governor Fayemi fulfilled the core of this promise but with important caveats. The Ekiti Agro-Cargo International Airport, sitting on 5,000 hectares along the Ado-Ijan road, was completed to the point of being commissioned on October 15, 2022 – just one day before he left office and two years after inaugurating it in October 2019.

Before the commissioning, Gov. Fayemi compensated citizens whose lands were affected by the project. The project included a 3.2-kilometer runway (CAT-9 4E category) capable of handling wide-bodied aircraft like Boeing 747-400, a terminal building, and an access road.

On commissioning day, an aircraft landed at the airport for the first time, marking a historic milestone for Ekiti State. The federal government, through Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika, supported the project as a catalyst for economic growth.

However, full commercial operations were not achieved before Fayemi left office. The airport remained uncompleted in the sense that additional work – including final approvals, navigational aids, and airline partnerships – was required.
